Walk the Moon's
synthy "Shut Up And Dance" rises 2-1 on Billboard's Alternative Songs
airplay chart, marking a feat not only for the band but for RCA Records:
the label is just the second to score three consecutive No. 1s at the
format and the first to do so in nearly 23 years.
"Dance" follows two fellow RCA acts to No. 1 on Alternative Songs, dethroning Cage the Elephant's "Cigarette Daydreams," which led for four weeks. That song followed Foo Fighters' eight-week reign with "Something From Nothing."
The last time a label had sent three consecutive singles to No. 1 on Alternative Songs? Summer 1992, when Reprise tripled up with the B-52's' "Good Stuff" (four weeks), Faith No More's "Midlife Crisis" (one) and Morrissey's "Tomorrow" (six). (The Alternative Songs chart began on Sept. 10, 1988.)
"Dance" takes the top spot on Alternative Songs with a 3 percent increase in plays at the format, according to Nielsen Music. The band previously peaked at No. 10 with its 2012 debut entry "Anna Sun" and followed with the No. 15-peaking "Tight Rope" in 2013.
"Dance" concurrently becomes Walk the Moon's first No. 1 on the Rock Airplay chart, where it rises 3-1 with an 8 percent lift to 10.4 million in rock radio listenership. It's crossing over, too, pushing 26-25 on Adult Pop Songs and nearing the Pop Songs chart.
